Most common errors with Tense

English grammar में tense का बहुत महत्वपूर्ण role है तथा Tense से यह पता चलता है कि  कोई कार्य किस काल (वर्तमान , भूत या भविष्य ) में हो रहा है. इसलिए tense शब्द verb के रूप का बोध कराता है, Tense से सम्बंधित कई प्रश्न competitive exams में पूछे जाते है/ कुछ common errors नीचे दी गई है, Lets have a look……

Tense errors

Incorrect: I have come Delhi yesterday.

Correct: I came Delhi yesterday.

Incorrect: They have gone to America a week ago.

Correct: They went to America a week ago.

Explanation:we use simple past tense with Yesterday, last +night/week/day/month/year, ago.

 

Incorrect: I had seen him last week.

Correct: I saw him last week.

Incorrect: I know Mr. Gupta  for the past five years.

Correct: I have known Mr. Gupta  for the past five years.

Incorrect: After she arrived home from school, she cooks food for the family.

Correct: After she arrives home from school, she cooks food for the family. (verb-tense consistency)

Correct: After she arrived home from school, she cooked food for the family. (verb-tense consistency)

Incorrect: He ate nothing since yesterday.

Correct: He has eaten nothing since yesterday.

Incorrect: It’s time we should buy a new car. 

Correct: It’s time we bought a new car.

Incorrect:  It is high time you would get a job.

Correct: It is high time you got a job.

Explanation:Use simple past tense [sub.+V2] with It is time/it is high time/It is right time.

Incorrect: The student complained that his pen was stolen.

Correct: The student complained that his pen had been stolen.

Incorrect:  I didn’t see him since he left New York.

Correct: I have not seen him since he left New York.

Rule:Present perfect + since + simple past

Explanation:We use the words  Recently, already, yet, so far with perfect tense.

Incorrect: Tom has been watching the Oscar nominated film three times.

Correct: Tom watched the Oscar nominated film three times.

 Incorrect:  The fond is flooded  with water because it is raining continuously for the last three days.

Correct: The fond is flooded  with water because it has been raining continuously for the last three days.

 Incorrect: A wise man did not pretend to know everything.

Correct: A wise man does not pretend to know everything.
